How to Make Tater Tot Casserole

Brown It &ndash To make this tater tot casserole, you&rsquoll start by browning the ground beef. I usually use lean ground beef, but feel free to use whatever type is your preference. Once the meat is cooked, you&rsquoll want to drain it if needed.

The Sauce &ndash First, you&rsquoll melt the butter and then stir in the flour until it has a paste-like texture. Next, you&rsquoll whisk in the milk and cook it until it thickens. Don&rsquot forget to stir in constantly while it&rsquos cooking so it doesn&rsquot burn on the bottom. It&rsquos really easy to whip up this creamy sauce to serve as the base of your casserole. The homemade sauce is totally delicious and blends all of the flavors together!

Compile &ndash Next, you&rsquoll mix the sauce and ground beef together, then add a bag of frozen mixed vegetables. Spread the meat mixture in a 9 x 9 baking dish, then sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese over the top of the casserole.

Give Me Some Tots &ndash Finally, add a layer of tater tots over the top of the meat mixture until you&rsquove covered it completely. You don&rsquot have to line them up as neatly as I did, of course, but you&rsquoll want a solid layer of tots on top.

Cook &ndash Bake the tater tot casserole for 50-55 minutes, until the tots are golden brown and the sauce is bubbling.

This casserole is best when it&rsquos hot from the oven, with the tots crispy and the cheese melty and gooey. It&rsquos simple and delicious comfort food! My kids sometimes turn up their noses at vegetables, but they will eat them happily in this casserole. That&rsquos a win in my book! This tater tot casserole is so delicious that you&rsquoll want to eat it all through the colder months! Recipe Tip &ndash I prefer taking a block of cheese and grating it to use in this recipe. First, I don&rsquot like the additives that are in a bag of pre-shredded cheese. I just love the flavor so much more and nothing beats that long stretch of cheese when you cut off a bite and eat it.

If you are looking for a freezer meal that you want to make and bake later, or even bring to another family, this is a great meal to freeze! Instead of popping it in the oven, after everything is made up and mixed together place the casserole in the freezer.

You will want to be sure that you place the casserole in an aluminum pan that is freezer-friendly. Then be sure to cover it tightly in aluminum foil.

When you are ready to bake it just take it out and thaw it completely before cooking. If it doesn’t thaw the whole way while by the time you are ready to cook it, add on a few more minutes for it to bake to make sure it’s cooked all the way through.

Use the casserole within 2 months to avoid freezer burn.

Ingredients in Tater Tot Casserole

The most wonderful thing about casseroles are their versatility. Many of the ingredients in this Tater Tot Casserole recipe are interchangeable, except of course for those tender taters it’s named for. Traditionally, this recipe calls for the following:

  • Ground beef
  • Cream of Mushroom Soup
  • Any kind of veggies you like. Green beans, corn, frozen mixed veggies or peas are favorites around here.
  • Piles of delicious crispy tater tots.
  • Cheese. Lots and lots of gooey cheese.

Can you freeze Tater Tot HotDish?

Yes! You can freeze Tater Tot HotDish. Prepare it in a freezer to oven safe pan (disposable aluminum pans work great, too!) and wrap it in aluminum foil after it is prepared (don’t bake it!). Simply thaw and bake when you are ready. Expect it to take an extra 30 minutes or so to bake.

Though our Tater Tot Hotdish recipe calls for ground beef, substitutes like turkey, venison, or other similar types may be used instead. It depends on your preference.

Like chili or chocolate chip cookies, every family has their “BEST” Tater Tot HotDish version. Today, I’m going to stick with the standard recipe and you can mix and match as you like!

Tater Tot Hotdish

If you're not from Minnesota, you've probably never heard of hotdish. It's time to broaden your horizons and give this tater tot topped comfort food a try. It's super easy to make and perfect for a cold winters night. You'll soon see why Minnesotans are obsessed with it.

What veggies should I add?

A traditional hotdish is made of ground beef mixed with frozen veggies, usually corn and green beens. Use whatever frozen or leftover veggies you have on hand, like black beans, peas, or broccoli.

Can I freeze it?

You sure can! Hotdish is the perfect meal to keep stored in the freezer for a busy night or a last minute dinner guest. Assemble the casserole as you normally would up to the point of baking. At this point wrap your dish tightly in plastic wrap and freeze. No need to defrost it before baking, just place in a preheated oven and bake as normal. You might need to add a few more minutes to a frozen casserole!

Do I need to cook the tater tots first?

Not necessarily. Most hotdishes won't require cooking your tater tots first, but of you want some extra crispy tots on top (who doesn't!?), then we recommend baking your tater tots first.
